Guisborough Priory

Categories: Historical Interest
Overall Rating:

A ruined Augustinian Priory, founded in 1119 by Robert de Brus II. The east end of the priory church is the only real intact remains, and is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture which shows that this was once a very wealthy medieval monastery.

The site is run by English Heritage. There is an entry fee, though Free admission to members.

This site is small, however it is very picturesque. The main east end is quite awe inspiring, and it really makes you imagine just how impressive the original structure was. As a result, it has been the subject of many photographic compositions. The backdrop to the ruins is the scene-setting cleveland hills.
There is no car parking except the on street parking available in the town centre. The Priory is just a very short walk from the main high street. It does not take long to walk round the site- in fact you will not need longer than 15-30 mins to walk around the ruins. There is a short gravel path, but much of the site is grassed over- presumably to avoid disturbing the ruins or any graves!
